Samsung Galaxy A42 5G is the company’s most affordable 5G phone yet

As part of Samsung’s Life Unstoppable event, which was held on 2 September, the company finally revealed the long-rumoured Galaxy A42 – it’s most affordable 5G phone yet.

While we’re still waiting for the Sammy to reveal just how affordable and when we’ll be able to get our hands on this cut-price 5G mobile, there are already a number of tidbits that we do now know.

The phone is fronted by a 6.6in Full HD+ 20:9 ‘Infinity-U’ display with a notched front-facing camera sitting at the top of the phone’s AMOLED panel. That display also conceals an under-display fingerprint sensor, just as its predecessor – the A41 – did.

On the back, there’s a quad-camera array with an, as yet, undisclosed set of sensors (up from a triple-sensor setup on the A41), accompanied by an LED flash.

Aesthetically, the phone sports a more squared appearance than previous A series entries, with a black holographic cross-hatching effect at play to help it stand out – it’s assumed to sport a plastic back, rather than glass as a result of its intended affordable price point.

The arrival of the A42 undercuts Samsung’s current most affordable 5G offering, the Galaxy A51 5G and democratises 5G even further so that more users can reap the benefits of this next generation of super-fast mobile connectivity.

Beyond the A42, Samsung also showcased other mobile hardware, including the new Galaxy Fit 2 activity tracker, new Galaxy Tab A7 slate and the Wireless Charging Trio – a wireless charging matt designed to accommodate two devices (the company used a Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and Galaxy Buds Live in its example) alongside a compatible wearable, like the new Galaxy Watch 3.

We’ll update this feature once Samsung reveals more about the Galaxy A42, including pricing and release availability, so check back often.
