Huawei was one of the first companies to release a foldable phone, with its Mate X following swiftly on the heels of Samsung’s Galaxy Fold.
As with any new technologies, there were a few issues to overcome, such as preventing the displays from being marked or damaged through use. Many wise tech fans knew to wait for the second (or third) round of releases before paying out the large fees that foldables demand, so speculation of an upcoming sequel from Huawei are causing some excitement.
We gather together all the news and rumours about the Huawei Mate X2.
When will the Huawei Mate X2 be released?
As Huawei has yet to announce the Mate X2, there is currently no official release date for the product. Rumours are also scarce on the issue, so we can only look to the previous models to see when Huawei might be planning to pull the covers back on its new foldable.
The initial Mate X launch was restricted to China on 15 November 2019, with the model never reaching Europe or the USA. This was followed by the Huawei Mate Xs, a revamped model that fixed a few of the original’s issues, which received a worldwide launch in March 2020.
If Huawei follows the latter’s example, then we could see the new Mate X2 appear in March 2021.
How much will the Huawei Mate X2 cost?
As with all foldables, due to the new nature of the technology, you can expect a pretty hefty price tag when the Mate X2 arrives. Exactly how much remains a mystery at the moment, but the previous models lined up as follows:
Huawei Mate X – £1999/$2600 (approx)
Huawei Mate Xs – £2299/$2700 (approx)
You can see here that there was an upwards trend on the Mate Xs launch price, but we think this might move back down to the £1999/$2600 range for the Mate X2 to bring it into line with its competitors which are available for the following amounts:
Checking the Huawei site for this article, we found that the UK price of the Mate Xs has already been slashed to £1599, suggesting either that the £2299 price tag was too much for most people or that a new model may be on the way.
What features will we see in the Huawei Mate X2?
Obviously, with no official statements from Huawei at the time of writing, this remains purely in the realms of rumour and speculation. But so far, we’ve seen a few reports that claim to show some of the features that might appear in the Mate X2.
The most interesting is a post on the Huawei UK community forum which points towards a patent filing that has the new Mate X2 featuring an updated design, with the device folding inwards (like a book) rather than in the outward fashion of the original Mate X.
The patent also shows that the Mate X2 could feature support for a stylus which would be housed in the sidebar, as well as a total of six cameras, giving it two more than the Mate X.
GSMArena also reports that Huawei has certified a new device with 66W fast charging, making this a step up of 20% over the Mate X and Mate Xs. It also states that the Mate X2 will most likely feature Wi-Fi 6 (which makes sense), but there’s still no word on the internal specs that it will contains.
91Mobiles has the Mate X2 appearing on a Chinese certification site, with the new handset featuring an 8.3in OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 5G support, EMUI 11 OS, side-mounted fingerprint sensor and running on the Kirin 9000 SoC, but this has yet to be confirmed.
As more news arrives, we’ll update this article, so do check back to see what Huawei has planned. Of course, the Mate X2 won’t launch into a vacuum, so also check out our guides to the rumours surrounding the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, Google Pixel Foldable and the best phones coming in 2021.
