With COVID-19 continuing to have a major impact on the world of cinema, Wonder Woman 1984 is the latest film to be affected.
Director and writer Patty Jenkins made the announcement that the film will be getting a dual cinema and streaming release – this time through HBO Max.
I can’t wait for the world to see this amazing woman on the screen. She’ll blow your mind and warm your heart. @GalGadot killed it in this film, and she does all that great and hard work for only the most honorable reasons. She is a true #Wonderwoman so I hope you enjoy #WW84 https://t.co/Q7fYuNAEab

The original US release date of 25 December will remain the same for both theatres and home releases. Empire has reported that Europe (and likely the UK) originally had the film set to release one week earlier on 16 December in cinemas – but this all depends on the state of lockdown by then.
Whilst the news of a home release is a relief to US viewers, the rest of the world is currently wondering how they’ll be able to tune in. It may be possible that a global home release is currently being organised (Now TV is the likely UK candidate) but there’s been no official confirmation yet.
But no need to despair – as there is a way to watch HBO Max from abroad. Keep on reading for more information and check out the biggest movies of 2020 right here.
How to watch Wonder Woman 1984 in the UK for free
To watch Wonder Woman 1984, you’ll have to have a HBO Max subscription, which costs $14.99 per month – however you can get a seven-day free trial.
If you don’t want to pay to watch the film, we recommend waiting to sign up until at least seven days before 25 December.
Unfortunately, both the HBO Max website and app are geo-blocked if you’re in the UK. However, this is easily overcome through the use of a VPN.
VPNs (virtual private networks) allow you to change your IP address so you can browse the internet as if you’re based in another country. To sign up for HBO Max, you will need a US server. For the best servers, performance and pricing, we recommend either NordVPN or ExpressVPN.
Once you’ve downloaded your chosen VPN, you’ll need to go through a bit of a complicated process for payment before you can watch Wonder Woman 1984.

For the next step, you’ll need the HBO Max app. We have successfully tested this method using NordVPN.
Once you’ve signed up for your VPN of choice, you’ll need to download it on either your iOS or Android device. The HBO Max website currently only allows you to sign up if you have a payment card that’s tied to the US. If you don’t have that, here’s the steps you should take:
Launch your VPN on your iOS/Android device and connect to a US server
Create a new Apple ID/Google Play account in your browser that’s tied to the US (leave the country blank)
Register your new account on your iOS/Android device app store
You should now have access to the US app store – download the HBO Max app
Create a new account with your email address and password
Use PayPal as your method of payment (this can be a UK account)
Once your account is verified, you can sign in from any device
You can see further details – such as how to sign up on specific devices – in our guide to watching HBO Max here in the UK.
After 25 December, you should be able to access Wonder Woman 1984 on the HBO Max app and website.
As always when using a VPN to access content abroad, be aware that you’ll be in violation of HBO Max’s terms of service, so the company could theoretically cancel your account if it realises you’re using a VPN. Proceed at your own risk.
