Whilst there’s been a lot of excitement surrounding the new Marvel Disney Plus shows, it’s been well over a year since we last saw an MCU film released. After numerous delays, the next in line is Black Widow.
Following the Avenger and agent Natasha Romanoff, the film Black Widow takes place in between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, exploring how Natasha survived on the run and what she had to encounter before she joined the team to defeat Thanos.
We’re only a few months away from the official release date for Black Widow, and you’re probably wondering how you’ll be able to watch it. We’ve rounded up everything you need to know about the cinema release, Disney Plus release and VOD release.

When does Black Widow release?
The release date is getting closer and closer – as Black Widow is currently set to release on 7 May 2021.
This release date has been pushed back two times already due to the ongoing pandemic – so hopefully this one will stick.

Will Black Widow release in cinemas?
Head of Marvel Kevin Feige has been mostly adamant that this film will get a traditional cinema release (via Deadline). Disney seems to want to stick to that, hence why it’s been delayed twice, rather than releasing on Disney Plus.
However, the current release date has a few problems attached to it. For one, in the UK cinemas are currently scheduled to open on 17 May, ten days after Black Widow releases. Plus, the UK isn’t the only country in lockdown.
Whilst many states in the USA are allowing people into the cinemas, many are at limited capacity – which means less revenue at the box office.
Plus, many people will still be hesitant to go the cinemas before receiving a vaccine. However, another Disney senior executive has opened up the possibility of a home release…
Will Black Widow release on Disney Plus?
CEO of Disney Bob Chapek has stated that the company will have a “last-minute” decision on whether Black Widow will release on 7 May 2021, and how it will release (via Bloomberg on YouTube). The company will remain flexible.
If it does go ahead on 7 May, it’s likely that it may get a dual cinema and home release – and that it will probably come to Disney+ Premiere Access.
Disney+ Premiere Access is a one-off payment on top of an existing Disney+ subscription to give viewers a way to watch films that under normal circumstances would only be available in theatres. So far only two films have been available in this method – Mulan and Raya and the Last Dragon.
Both of these films cost £19.99 in the UK, and $29.99 in the US. If Black Widow does release on here, this price may be even higher, considering that Marvel has such a wide-spanning audience.
Of course, this is all speculation – once we know more, we’ll update this article.
Will Black Widow be available on VOD and DVD?
The other possible way that Black Widow may get released at home is via VOD services. Many Warner Bros. Shows have been given rental access, whilst being available to stream on HBO Max in the US.
However, we doubt that this will happen immediately. We assume that the film we be available to rent and buy both digitally and on DVD at least a few months after it first releases either in cinemas or on Disney Plus Premiere Access.
If we hear anything different, we’ll update this article accordingly.
