How to Uninstall the New Microsoft Edge Browser

Microsoft is in the process of delivering the new Chromium-based Edge browser to all Windows 10 users.

The company is aiming for all users to have the new browser in time for the release of the November update.

In a support article, Microsoft emphasises that the new Edge app cannot be uninstalled. Here’s the official line:

“The new version of Microsoft Edge is included in a Windows Update, so the option to uninstall it or use the legacy version of Edge is no longer available.”

The company also said that distributing the new Edge browser to all Windows 10 users will ensure that everyone is using the version with the best performance, data protection and security.

How to uninstall the new Edge browser anyway

However, as is often the case, the situation isn’t so black and white. There is, in fact, a workaround that ensures you can remove the new Edge browser from your Windows 10 PC:

Open File Explorer by typing in the search bar or clicking the icon in the taskbar
Head to the C: drive > Program Files (x86) > Microsoft > Edge > Application > 84.0.522.52
In the ‘Installer’ folder, look for a file called ‘setup’ and highlight it
Go to File > Open Windows PowerShell as administrator
A message will come up asking if you ‘want to allow this app to make changes to your device’. Click ‘Yes’ to confirm
Copy and paste the following into the window that appears:.setup.exe –uninstall –system-level –verbose-logging –force-uninstall
Hit enter and the new version of Edge should be uninstalled from the system immediately. In some circumstances, you may have to confirm that you want to do this

This is by no means a permanent change, as you can simply reinstall Edge from the Microsoft website if you’d like to give it a try.
