The Pixel 5 is out now. Google’s latest flagship marks a change in strategy for the tech giant, with its most expensive 2020 phone costing just £599.
While the phone inevitably makes some compromises at this price point, there’s a lot to like about the Pixel 5. It comes packing a 5G-enabled Qualcomm 765G processor, 6in 90Hz OLED screen and hefty 4080mAh battery, making it an extremely well-balanced phone.
Indeed, in our 9/10 review of the Pixel 5, we praised its excellent design and user experience, while the cameras are as great as ever.
Don’t confuse its comparatively low price tag as not needing protection though – to maximise the phone’s lifespan we’d recommend throwing on a case. With that in mind, here are our top picks for the Pixel 5.
Quick disclaimer: We haven’t been able to test all the cases in this round-up for ourselves, but can easily recommend them based on the brand’s strong reputation.
Official Google Fabric
Google only makes one official case for the Pixel 5, but the good news is it’s an excellent pick.
Made from over 70% recycled material (including plastic bottles), this has has a unique fabric design that’s machine washable.
It doesn’t compromise on performance, though, with a slim fitting for shock absorption and raised edges to protect the screen and camera module.
The case is available in four distinctive colour options, including the stealthy Basically Black pictured.
You can buy it now for £35/US$40.
Spigen Tough Armor
Spigen’s Tough Armor has been one of our favourite rugged cases for a quite a few years, and the Pixel 5 variant is just as impressive as ever.
The case is comprised of multiple layers of reinforced polycarbonate and TPU, which provide military grade protection for the phone. Between these layers is extreme impact foam, which provides excellent shock absorption.
Despite all that reinforcement, the Tough Armor case adds relatively little bulk to the Pixel 5. There’s even a built-in stand for hands-free viewing.
The cheapest place to buy this case is Amazon, where it’s currently available for £14.99/US$14.99.
Bellroy has a growing reputation for high quality phone accessories, and that’s emphasised by the quality of this Pixel 5 case.
Made from a blend of environmentally sourced leather and flexible polymer, it offers great protection for the phone while adopting a similarly minimalist design language.
At just 11mm thick, it’s the slimmest case the company has ever made. We particularly like the Racing Green variant pictured, but it’s also available in Toffee, Coral and Black.
You can buy it now for £30 (approx. £40).
Mous Limitless 3.0
Now in its third generation, Mous’ Limitless case strikes an excellent balance between protecting your phone and looking good in the process.
The polycarbonate and TPU design combines with the company’s AiroShock technology to provide excellent drop protection. It also comes with AutoAlignPlus, making it compatible with a host of Mous accessories.
The case does all this while remaining extremely thin and light, adding almost no bulk to your device.
Only the Walnut version pictured is currently in stock, but it’s also usually available in Aramid Fibre and Speckled Fabric variants.
You can buy it now for £34.99/US$49.99.
Caseology has become the go-to case manufacturer for many people recently, and it’s no surprise considering the strength of Legion.
The case has been redesigned for 2020, combining a polycarbonate hard shell with a flexible TPU inner to keep your Pixel 5 in top condition.
That also gives it plenty of extra grip, while still remaining compatible with wireless charging and screen protectors.
The black variant pictured is available from Amazon for £13.99/US$15.99, but you can also head straight to the Caseology website to get it in grey or pink.
Olixar Leather Wallet
We couldn’t have a case round-up without a wallet case, could we? Olixar’s offering is a great inexpensive option, providing great all-around protection for a relatively affordable price.
The big benefit over cheaper case of this type is that it’s made from genuine leather, which gives it a premium quality and should prolong its lifespan.
As the name suggests, the case can also double as a wallet, with card slots and space for cash or important documents. There’s even a built-in stand, allowing you to watch videos or browse the web hands-free.
You can buy it now for £20.25/US$25.99.
Otterbox’s Symmetry case is our top pick if you want to protect your Pixel 5 without covering up its attractive design.
Made from clear polycarbonate and reinforced with synthetic rubber, it provides an impressive 3x the military standard for drop protection. It’s equally adept at repelling bumps, fumbles or any other impacts associated with everyday usage.
It does all this within a remarkably thin profile, meaning it adds very little bulk to the device.
You can buy it now from Amazon for £29.99/US$35.66.
